Domain transfer between providers

In short

A domain transfer moves a domain from one provider to another. The core is the auth code: the losing provider supplies it, the gaining provider starts the transfer with it. Depending on the TLD, transfer locks and confirmation steps apply; the domain itself is retained.

Process

  1. Request the auth code from the losing provider.
  2. Start the transfer at the new provider with domain + auth code.
  3. Await confirmation (holder/registry) if required.

Locks & deadlines

Some TLDs lock transfers for a while after registration or a previous transfer. Check in advance whether a forwarding or nameserver setting blocks the planned sale/transfer.

Before the move

Back up DNS settings (see nameservers & DNS) and plan deadlines to avoid downtime.

Domain knowledge grounded in official sources

Registry rules and periods come from primary sources such as DENIC, nic.at or EURid — with source link and access date. Editorial review and sign-off are human, and economic affiliations are disclosed.
