Registering a domain – step by step

In short

You register a domain by checking availability, choosing a registrar and providing the required holder data. What matters is not just the first-year price but the renewal price and the feature set. For EU extensions, eligibility or presence criteria may apply.

Process

  1. Check availability of the desired name.
  2. Choose a suitable registrar.
  3. Provide holder and contact data (for EU extensions possibly eligibility criteria; NIS2 data quality).
  4. Complete the registration and set up DNS/forwarding if needed.

Taken or expiring domains

If the name is taken, only waiting for the release helps — via a backorder. The deletion cycle depends on the TLD.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find cheap offers for domain registrations?

Many registrars advertise low first-year prices. Watch the renewal price, the included services (DNS, forwarding, email) and possible transfer fees — the cheapest first price is not automatically cheapest over the term.

How do I register a soon-to-expire domain?

A still-taken, soon-to-expire domain cannot be registered right away. Depending on the TLD, a protective/quarantine period follows deletion; only then is it free. For such cases a backorder is the right option.

Domain knowledge grounded in official sources

Registry rules and periods come from primary sources such as DENIC, nic.at or EURid — with source link and access date. Editorial review and sign-off are human, and economic affiliations are disclosed.
