Domain renewal: reassessment instead of habit

In short

Renewing a domain should not confirm an old emotion but be a new, data-based decision. Buying is a hypothesis, renewal a reassessment, the renewal fee a cost decision — and sellability is proof by market, data or strategy. What matters is whether the domain was ever made visible and tested.

Buying is a hypothesis — renewal is a decision

At the start there is often a gut feeling: a keyword, an industry, a project idea. Renewal, by contrast, should rest on data. A domain without an enquiry is not automatically bad — perhaps it was simply never made properly visible.

First make it visible, then measure

Before "no enquiry" counts as an argument, it should be clear: was the domain listed on marketplaces? Was there a sales page with a buy-now or make-offer option? An SEO landing page? Was it measured with traffic, Search Console, parking data or clicks? Was the price tested? Especially today, simple SEO landing pages can be created quickly with AI — so a domain can be judged by impressions, clicks and buyer reactions, not just hope.

The hard portfolio maths

A healthy domain portfolio should sell roughly at least 1% per year — with 1,000 domains that is about 10 sales. These sales must carry the running costs. That is why the renewal price is central: a cheap .de can be tested longer; for pricier extensions (e.g. .at or .com) the reason must be clearer.

The rule

Buy = hypothesis. Renewal = reassessment. Renewal fee = cost decision. Sellability = proof by market, data or strategy. Hope alone is not a reason to hold — but deleting a domain unchecked, just because it passively received no enquiry, is not good portfolio management either. Alternatives to deleting are parking, selling or monetisation via ReDomain.

Domain knowledge grounded in official sources

Registry rules and periods come from primary sources such as DENIC, nic.at or EURid — with source link and access date. Editorial review and sign-off are human, and economic affiliations are disclosed.
