Buying expired domains

In short

An expired domain can be acquired in several ways: via marketplaces and auctions, by direct purchase from the current holder or — if it is not yet free — via a backorder on the re-release. Which route fits depends on the domain’s status and the TLD. Vetting always comes before buying.

Acquisition routes

  • Marketplace/auction: already-traded domains at market or bid prices.
  • Direct purchase: approaching the current holder.
  • Backorder: if the domain will soon become free (see backorder).

Costs & timing

Prices range from a few euros (fixed-price marketplaces) to higher amounts for sought-after names. For context see What does catching a domain cost?

Vet first, then buy

Domain knowledge grounded in official sources

Registry rules and periods come from primary sources such as DENIC, nic.at or EURid — with source link and access date. Editorial review and sign-off are human, and economic affiliations are disclosed.
