Drop-Catching

Drop-catching means re-registering a domain the moment it becomes publicly available after its period ends (the "drop"). Because of competition it is usually automated.

How it differs: a backorder is placed in advance; drop-catching emphasises the registration moment itself.

Example: several services try to register a sought-after domain at the same instant — the fastest success wins.
